The Demon

The Demon

Melanie Whitcomb walks into her babies’ room. They are on the floor playing with a ball. They will sit there all day and push that ball back and forth to each other. Mel reaches down and picks up the ball mid-roll getting dour looks from the girls.
“Now, girls. You know its bath time.” Melanie said smiling.
“No bath!” the twin girls said as they ran out the room giggling.
Melanie chased after them giggling herself. She would always let them run around and play chase with them for a bit to tire them out before bed.
“Stop playing and get in that tub!” A voice yelled from the back room.
The girls stopped in their tracks and runs into their mother’s arms.
“You heard, Daddy. Bath time for real now.” Mel said to the girls.
“Go get your clothes from your beds and come in the bathroom. I’ll have your bath ready. And remember, no playing around this time.”
The little girls ran down the hallway and went into their room. Annie got her clothes, but Bobbie couldn’t help but look in the corner. Annie grabs Bobbie’s arm as they run by a dark shadow on the way out.
“Dark man, dark man.” The girls said.
“Your Daddy is just tired from all the hours. He loves you girls. He’s not a dark man.” Mel said kissing them on their foreheads.
Melanie put the girls in the tub and as soon as they got in there, they started water fighting. Mel looks on the toilet seat and notices Bobbie didn’t get her pajamas.
“Mommy is going to run and get your jammies real fast. Do not get out of this tub.”
Melanie leaves the door wide open and runs down the hall to the girls’ room. She walks in and is confronted by the Dark Shadow. She blinks and is in another world. Nothing but ocher colored mountains and desert surround her. The red sky filled with dark clouds, a demon stands before her.
“Melanie, I need you do to something for me.” The Demon said.
     “Where am I” Melanie asked.
“You are in the Next Place.” The Demon said with a smile. “Now I need you to do something. Are you up for it?”
“This can’t be real. I can’t be here, I have babies in the tub.”
“Don’t worry about that. Time stops when you are here. They are safe as long as you do something for me.” The Demon said.
     “Well?”
“You need to kill your husband before he kills you and your girls.” The Demon said.
     “He would never hurt us.”
“You know he will too. I know you been telling yourself it’s just the hours and that he’s just in a mood, but he has dark intentions.”
“No. I am not doing anything to hurt him. He is just tired and likes his space.”
“Do you want him to keep torturing you and your girls? He will kill you all eventually” The Demon said.
“Stop! I want to go back home! I will never hurt him!” Melanie screamed.
“Fine. But you will never see your babies again.” The Demon said coldly.
She was back in the cold room with goosebumps covering her whole body. Melanie runs to the bathroom, but the door is closed. As soon as she grabs the door knob and swings the door open, she goes blind.

Murder

Murder

11/1/96
They killed that mother fucker one year ago yesterday. On Halloween. How fitting. I’m talking about The Suicide Killer. When I was 16 (back in 1983), he drugged me and rolled my car off of a cliff and I was able to get out of the car before it caught fire. I got lucky he didn’t find this out, because this wasn’t in his normal area and didn’t keep track on my case. He would kill people and make them look like suicides. He did this from the early 80s until he got caught in the early 90s. I am the only survivor from his attacks. Well, there was a drugged out stripper, but she doesn’t count in my eyes; he didn’t do the deed and she lived, he let her live. He said I had Dark Energy in my eyes before I blacked out. What 16 year old boy has Dark Energy? What the fuck is that anyways. Fucking nutcase. I am happy he is gone. I been looking forward to this for a long time. I even went to go see him get that Lethal Injection yesterday. His last words were, “I’ll be back.” The Terminator? You fucking kidding me? You won’t be back, you fucking nut job, you’re dead. I would like to know what he ate for his last meal.
Figured I can move on with my life knowing he is dead and not a threat anymore. Who knows, he could have busted out of prison. He’s… well, was a very smart man. Not a thought any longer though. And I am very happy for that.
Funny thing happened this morning. I went to work and got out of the truck and there were 4 crows sitting on the bed of my truck bed. With all of them looking at me; I walked by them without them moving, except their head to watch me pass. I got to the break room door and I looked back. They were all there, still looking. Pitch black but shining blue where the sun bounced off of them. I had a normal work day. 10 hours of moving coal from the dock to the pits. Fixing broken down coal belts. The usual. Walking out with a buddy he says, “Look at those Crows on your truck! I never noticed any Crows around here before.” I couldn’t believe it, they were in the same spot. I think they were in the same order as well. How could they wait there for 10 hours, and why? I couldn’t tell Frank about them being there this morning because he might think I’m crazy or something. I said bye to Frank, got in the truck and started it, thinking that would make the Crows fly off. I started the truck and looked in my rear view mirror and watched them bounce on the bed door and get closer to the cab. It was unreal. I put it in drive and got on the high way. No way would they stay in the bed on the highway. I looked again once I got on the highway and they were gone! So I thought… One hopped in the cab through the rear window, then another and the rest followed. They gathered in the back passenger seat looking at me. “You guys need to go.” I said firmly. “I can’t have Crows following me around. If you stay the whole ride, I want some gas money.” I joked… They didn’t laugh. The Crows just sat there all the way home. Pulling into the drive way I slammed on the brakes when I stopped thinking it would spook them, it didn’t. They just swayed with the truck. I opened the door and they (1 by 1) bounced around the truck and out my driver side door. They followed me inside the house and been here all night. It’s very strange, yes, but I find them comforting. I might look on the internet to see what they eat. I never had a Murder of Crows as pets before. Well, off to bed and fingers crossed they don’t peck my eyes out in my sleep.

11/2/96
9:10 AM – They slept in my room all night. As soon as I opened my eyes and raised my head to look around my room, they all watched me with eagerness. Bounced around the room and got on the bed and they started playing. I think I need to go out and find some road kill to bring back home for them to eat all day. I’ll spend that time bonding with them. Can you bond with a Crow? They even remember faces or voices? I will find out.
2:22 AM – Today was interesting. Did the normal routine: Shower, shave, shit, breakfast and coffee. They stayed with me the whole time. Little bastards even watched me wipe my ass. Asking some Crows to leave doesn’t work, and I’m not trying to get my ass killed by these mother fuckers either. I sense they won’t hurt me, but I’m not going to test that theory.
I read online that Crows enjoy road kill. So I got in my truck and drove down some long back road and came across a raccoon. Sadly, it was still alive with its back end crushed. I put it out of its misery while it’s Gaze of fellow raccoon watched. It had to be done; for its own sake and to feed the Crows. I placed the animal in the bed while the Crows sat in the cab waiting for me. They did not want to leave my sight since I woke up. Glued to me! And I couldn’t be happier for the company.
Half way home they got intrigued by the smell coming from the bed and started to play around. Chunky (is what I call the big one) bounced and shook his feathers at Midnight (he is the darkest out of them all) while Midnight just stared blankly at him. Rob and Bob (I think they are twins, they act just alike) chased each other around the whole cabin until we got home.
I pulled up to the garage, opened my door and waited for the crew to bounce their little asses out of the cab. They didn’t stall this time, they hopped right out and flew to the bed. “Hold your horses!” I said to them and they just watched me walk slowly to the bed, put on my glove and grab the raccoon. Walking to the back yard, I heard clicking behind me and they were following me like little ducklings. I can’t believe this is happening to me, is what I thought as I opened the side gate.
“Okay, Guys. I hope you like raccoon.” I said as I dropped it by the fire pit. They watched me for a few minutes like they were asking me if it was okay. “Eat up!” I said loudly to them. They took a few timid hops back and forth at the raccoon. Touch it with their beaks and bounce back. Midnight was the first to get a few good bites and the rest followed, like they always do. Midnight was the leader and I knew that from when I first met them. They ate all night and I sat in the back yard drinking a few beers and played with them. I had a golf ball I would roll at them and they would try to be the first to peck it back at me. Chunky liked to get petted, so he was always by me getting some love. Rob and Bob always were play fighting each other and Midnight was always in the background watching everything. He seemed to be a thinker and didn’t like to be touched. It was a good night.
With them I felt different. I have an old knee injury from high school and it doesn’t bother me at all anymore. I seem to smell everything and my site feels like it improved as well. I’m only 29 and don’t have anything other than my knee issue, but I just feel… stronger. Is it the Crows?

11/3/96
3:01 AM - The Crows are out back mourning, Chunky. He stayed outside longer than the rest of use to eat more of that raccoon, and a stray cat came and killed him. We heard his cries and we all went out back as soon as we could, but it was too late. He died after we stood by his side. They been out there ever since. I guess they do have deep feelings. It’s been hours since he been gone and they are still by his side. Strange, with him gone, I feel a little weaker; less sharp.
The day went great. We woke up late, around noon. Did my usual, but this time they didn’t need a show. When I got out of the shower, I left some lukewarm water in the tub for them to have fun while I ate. I got done eating and went out back to put the raccoon in the shade, so they could have that for later. Came back in, drained the water and we went outback so they could sit in the sun and warm up. Rob and Bob did their normal play fighting back and forth. Chunky kept bouncing and walking around Midnight; he wasn’t entertained. Midnight always had his eye on me and seemed to be thinking all the time. Nothing ever got by him.
I was enjoying watching the boys play, when I noticed Midnight look sharply at the street. I heard a loud screech and a scream. I ran out front and saw little pink shoes under a car. A woman jumped out of the car, and a woman came running down her driveway.
“My baby! My baby!” The woman screamed
“Get ready to pull her out.” I said her to without even thinking.
I went to the mid-sized car and put my hands by the back passenger side wheel and lifted the car with ease. I watched the mother pull her baby girl by the ankles until she was from under the car. I let the car down and kneeled next to the little girl, which couldn’t be more than 3 years old and put my hand on her little chest to see if she was breathing.
“Her chest is caved in!” The mother screamed.
I felt heat and saw a light coming from under my hand and the little girl started to breathe again. I removed my hand and her chest was like nothing ever happened to her.
“Penny, baby… Look at Mommy.” She said.
“Give her time to recover…” I stalled for a name.
“I am May. Penny, please open your eyes…” May begged.
“I called 911 and they are on the way. I am so sorry, lady. I didn’t see her at all.” The driver said.
Little Penny opened her green eyes, looked at her mom and reached for a hug.
“I wouldn’t move that child.” Some man said from behind me.
“Don’t worry, Sir. She’s fine now.” I said without a doubt. I knew she was okay. May picked up her daughter and gave her a big hug with tears running down her face. May lifted the little girl’s shirt, and there was no marks what-so-ever.
“Sir, how did you do that? Why was there light coming from your hand?” May whispered to me with curious eyes.
“I don’t know. I just know that Penny will be okay.”
“I don’t know what I would have done if I lost her. Thank you.”  She said as she kissed my cheek.
The Crows were on the car the whole time. With all the chaos going on, no one noticed them. Cops came. Ambulance came. Coroner came. But they didn’t have anything to do. Little Penny was fine. May didn’t want to press any charges. The car didn’t have any damage. Everyone just went back to their day. I’m sure May and Little Penny will have the tastiest dinner of their lives tonight. I am happy I was outside to hear those tires screech. If I didn’t, I would be reading about a little girl getting killed in front of my house tomorrow.
To celebrate what happened and to wrap my head around what just happened, we went in the back yard and I drank while the Crows played and ate. We were out there for the rest of the day. They are still out there next to Chunky boy. I can feel them hurting for him, and I can feel the effects of him passing away. I feel a little weak and my knee is kind of sore again. Who knows, that could just be from adrenaline; but I doubt it. I think I’m going to go back out there and say my farewells to good ol’ Chunky boy.

11/4/96
I woke up today and they were still outside. The morning dew beading on their black feathers, they stood in a circle around good ol’ Chunky. I went out back and told them to come in while I did my morning ritual, they didn’t hear me. So, I went in and did my thing and left the tub ¼ full of warm water, went outside and told them to come in and take a bath. They came bouncing inside in a single line.
“Get that mud off of you!” I yelled at them as I waited in the kitchen. I heard splashing and cawing, so I rushed into the bathroom and saw it was only the two fighting with Midnight on the edge of the tub watching. Shaking my head, I told them to come on.
We went out front so they can warm up in the sun. Seems to be the routine. My porch is more towards the left side of my house and mostly out of view from the people across the street from me. I say this because there was this sloppy looking mother fucker across the street (next to that girl’s house that got ran over) that didn’t belong there. He had a buzzed head and looked like he didn’t shave for weeks. I watched him walk around the house for a few minutes. He seemed to be looking for something. I noticed him pull out a gun and I started to head over to the house next to him to ambush this sloppy looking scum. Mrs. Johnson’s garage door opened and she started to back out. He ducked on the side of the garage and pulled her out when she stopped to get the mail. She screamed and he shot her in the gut.  Rob and Bob flew over there and started fucking with the guy. I ran across the yard and Midnight flew right next to me. I had a long run and watched Rob knock the gun out of his hand and when Bob went to get the gun from the ground this ugly mother fucker stomped on Bob, killing him instantly. As soon as he did that, my left knee gave out and I fell. I thought Midnight would go help, but he stayed by me, watching me. I wish I knew what he thought sometimes. I got up just in time to see Rob peck on of this asshole’s eyes out. I ran full speed and tackled him as hard as I could. He pulled out a knife and swung, just missing my throat. I rolled over and got him in a rear naked choke hold until he passed out.
“Oh my God! Are you okay? I already called 911. They are on the way!” May yelled from her porch.
“Yes, May. I’m fine. It’s this dickhead’s blood. Go back inside and lock the door until the cops show.” I said.
“Mrs. Johnson, the cops and ambulance will be here soon.” I said.
I heard a loud click right behind my left ear, I turned around and he hit me with the gun. My vision went blurry and he was on top of me putting more bullets in the gun. He slid the clip back in, yanked back on it and pointed it at me. I hit the gun just as it went off and I shoved my thumb in his good beady eye. I threw him off and he went for the gun that was next to me. This time I got it and shot him in his face. His weak body went limp and fell on his back.
I heard Mrs. Johnson gurgling, so I ran to her. She was struggling to breathe and I could see blood coming from her mouth. Her eyes screamed Help Me. I put my hand over the gunshot wound and felt something press against my palm. I made a fist, opened my hand and the bullet was there. I pulled up her shirt and wiped away the blood; there was no longer an entry wound. Looking at her face I could tell she was gone. I tried CPR a few times and the last time I put my mouth to hers I felt a cool air going in my mouth. I pulled away a few inches and noticed a black stream of air coming from her mouth and going in mine. The more that came out of her, the more alive she looked. She started to cough and the black stream stopped.
“What happened? Why am I on the ground?” She whispered.
“This man tried to rob you, and he knocked you out.” I lied.
“Sir, step away from the body!” a cop yelled.
“She is not a body.” I said as I got up.
“Put your hands behind your head, interlace them and slowly walk back towards my voice!” The cop said.
While walking back I saw that Rob got shot by that stray bullet and wasn’t going to make it. Midnight was by his side. I walked back until I felt a firm grip pull my hands down and I got on the ground.
“Stop that! He helped! He helped!” May screamed from her front yard.
They talked to me while the paramedics looked at Mrs. Johnson and talked to May about what happened. I ended up going to the station for a few hours to say my side of the story and it went perfectly with what May said, so they let me going telling me not to leave the county until they get everything worked out. May gave me a ride home from the station.
“How are you in the right place at the right time?” She asked while driving.
     “Just lucky, I guess.”
“It’s more than that and you know it. How did you do it again?”
     “Do what?”
May looked at me with sharp eyes, “Don’t play stupid. You saved her like you did with Penny. Only different this time. I watched you pull death out of her through her mouth.”
“I have these Crows following me. I haven’t felt so strong and alive in my life since they came into mine. But since I lost Chunky and then Bob today, I’m feeling slower.”
I felt a strong pain in my stomach and sensed blood stream down from my nose.
     “Pull over!” I shouted.
I opened the door and puked blood all over the side of the car. I could barely even stand on my left leg.
“Are you okay? Need to go to the ER?” May asked.
“Rob died. I know it. Please, just take me home.”
When I got home, I limped to the back yard and Midnight had Rob and Bob next to Chunky. I told Midnight I would be right back out. I had to come inside to take a hot shower and get this blood off of me. I can’t believe how weak I feel. I think knee is dislocated and tore like it was in high school.
Enough writing for tonight. I’m going to grab a bottle, a six pack and go drink with my only buddy, Midnight. I hope I bond with him tonight.

11/5/96
1:10 PM: Mrs. Johnson is fine. She is cleaning her drive way with her husband. Shook up still, but alive. I can’t say I’m fine. My whole body aches and my knee is swollen just like I injured it back in the day. I been laying on the couch since I got up this morning. All I can do it lay here and look out the front window. Waiting for something to happen, but nothing yet. I hope nothing happens today; I’m not sure I have the strength. Those three took something from me when they died. Took more than they gave me I’m sure.
9:03 PM: I have to make this quick because I can’t keep my eyes open or use my hands for much longer. I took a nap and woke up with Midnight on top of me. He was holding a paper clipping of the Suicide Killer I cut out for my scrapbook. I asked him what he was holding and he laid it softly on my chest and looked at me for some time. He hopped off of me and went into the kitchen. He stopped at the fridge and moved my magnetic letters to spell: I’m Back. Took me a minute and I thought of the Suicide Killer’s last words were, “I’ll be back.” This can’t be happening, I thought to myself. Midnight walked through the kitchen and came back into the living room, giving me one last cold stare before he went outside. I watched him hop through the tall grass and onto the sidewalk. He waited for some time before he flew into the road and got ran over by a car. I passed out and woke up with my knee wide open. All my scars opened up from past injuries and bones broke that were once mended. I’m full blown concussed from all those hard hits I took in high school. My mouth is pouring blood from when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. I have a hole in my stomach from when I had my appendix taken. I am not going to last long.
That’s not even the worst of it. I woke and May had poor little Penny in her arms in the front yard screaming for help. Her little chest was caved back in and she was pale. Next door, Mrs. Johnson’s husband was on the phone in the front yard with tears running down his face and he was covered in blood. I’m sure her wounds came back. Everything I did got taken back when Midnight died.
I guess the Suicide Killer got what he wanted after all. I can’t stay awake any longer. I know I won’t make it past Midnight. I’m sorry, May. I’m sorry, Mr. Johnson. I tried to sqnw flksj flslfllskl…………

The End
